CHRONICLE & ECHO,

------------------------------------------------------------------------
MEMBERS of Northampton’s Polish community have been invited to an evening to get advice on
• crime,
• employment,
• housing regulations
• and education.
The evening will have staff from 20 organisations and aims to
bring the community closer together with the people who can help them.
Representatives from:
• Northamptonshire Police,
• Northamptonshire County Council,
• Northamptonshire Teaching Primary Care Trust and
• Northampton Borough Council will be there along with
• the Citizen’s Advice Bureau,
• Victim Support and
• the Race Equality Council.
PC Ron Frater, community liaison officer for Northamptonshire Police, said:
“The whole idea is to raise awareness within the Polish community about
all of the facilities that are there for them.
“It is about encouraging them to report incidents of crime,
to engage with the police and to educate them on systems and processes
which they may not be aware of.”
Martin Lord, manager of Northampton’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau said
the way migrant workers were treated in the county was appalling.
He said: “It’s a scandal the number of problems facing Northampton’s migrant workers.
Polish workers here work the cheapest jobs for the miminum wage
but employers are finding ways to exploit their vulnerability by
not paying them for the hours they work or withholding holiday pay.”
The evening will take place from 7pm until 9.30pm
on Wednesday, October 17 at Northampton’s Guildhall.
